General Practice (GP) Placements

All Tracks within FY2 feature a four month placement in a local General Practice, with a trained Clinical Supervisor.  As with other specialties, this opportunity will provide experience of a specific area of medicine, but will take you out of the hospital and into the community.

Point of contact

Each GP Practice has a Practice Managers, who will welcome you to the team and be available to answer any non-clinical questions, i.e. timetables, Sick Leave, Annual Leave, Study Leave, etc.

Timetables

Each Practice has a timetable template, which provides a balance of clinic work and administration, training time and formal supervision from your CS.  This will be supplied to you by the PM prior to your start day.  Your first week will include an induction process to ensure you are familiar with the premises, the team and the timetable.

Expenses

You are permitted to apply for travel expenses when working in a GP placement, for both commuting and home visits.  Please see the GP Placement - Travel Expenses Claim Form for the conditions required to be met in order for your application to be successful. Please get into the habit of submitting your expenses monthly.  You are only able to back date claims for three months, so do not wait until the end of your four month placement.

Expenses must be claimed via the EASY expenses system (with a link to it EASY | Login (giltbyte.com)

Support

Whilst working in the community, you may feel disconnected from the Foundation Programme, following your previous hospital based placements.  This is to be expected, but we urge you to seek support when you need it. Your PM and CS at the Practice have worked with many FY2s, so will understand any concerns.  The Foundation Programme Administrator and your Foundation Programme Director are always available to offer support.
