Leadership

As part of your teaching programme, several days are dedicated to Leadership, to support you in the production of your QI project – an FY2 competency.

There are two Leadership pathways to choose from.

A bit of background first!

Leadership is a skill used to a greater or lesser extent by everyone in their roles.

Leadership is a Foundation Programme competency and as such, we build on your experiences at FY1 (where you led members of your team, led project work, etc.) and use dedicated teaching sessions to strengthen your skills throughout FY2.

QI is also a Foundation Programme competency.  You will witness how leadership is required as part of a department Audit in FY1, so these FY2 sessions will be useful for managing the creation of your QI project in FY2 too.

The options

Each Trust handles Leadership in a different way, but Blackpool is extremely fortunate to have an on-site Organisational Development team and the funding to source input from Lancaster University.

At the end of FY1, you are asked to choose which pathway would best suit you for your FY2 experience.

1. Foundation Leadership Programme (FLP)

  • Hosted by our Trust’s Organisational Development team
  • Dedicated self-directed learning time to work on your QI project
  • QI report, e.g. poster, summary or presentation (for upload to HORUS)
  • Register your QI with the Audit Office
  • Register your QI with the Library database
  • Formal presentation not compulsory
  • No online modules to complete

2. Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma and MSc in Medical Leadership (CETAD)

  • Hosted by the Centre for Education, Training and Development (CETAD) from Lancaster University
  • Online modules and assessments to complete throughout the year
  • Dedicated self-directed learning time to work on your QI project and CETAD assessments
  • Formal presentation at the end of the year
  • Register your QI with the Audit Office
  • Register your QI with the Library database
  • Limited to 18 places – application form and interview process
  • More details…

Specific topics for each pathway are to be confirmed, but will be akin to the following:

  • Personal Learning and Development
  • Understanding Leadership and Management
  • The Role of Doctors in Health Service Improvement
  • Collaborative and Team Working
  • Leading and Managing People
  • Leading Others through Change
  • Analysing Drivers for Change
  • Models for Planning Change

Each pathway will be offered support from the following additional sources:

  • The Trust’s Service Improvement Lead
  • The Trust’s Project Management Office team
  • FY2 Director
  • Library Manager and QI database owner

How to apply

We operate an opt in approach.

If you would like to apply for the CETAD pathway, you will be asked to complete an application form.

Applications will be shortlisted and interviews scheduled during May.  The interviews will be 10 minutes long and you should be prepared to evidence your commitment to successfully completing the CETAD course.

PLEASE NOTE: Non-completion of the CETAD course will warrant a cost incurred, circa £2,000.  The trainee is responsible for paying this cost in full.

If you would prefer to commit to the FLP pathway, no further action is required.  You will be automatically allocated to that course of sessions.

QI Awards

Whichever pathway you choose, we actively encourage each of you to submit your FY2 QI project to the QI Awards, scheduled in June each year.  The Awards are open to all trainees, with 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes awarded to the best of those shortlisted.

Questions?

To help you decide which pathway is for you, your FY2 Director will present the options at an FY1 teaching session during April and will answer any questions at the time.

You can also quiz the current FY2s about their experience of the pathway they chose.
