Hospital patients across the Fylde coast are receiving important information quicker thanks to new digital dictation technology.

In November 2013, Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust decided to look at new technologies for patient letters after recognising delays between clinics and administration teams.

As a result the Trust purchased a new digital solution from Leeds-based G2Speech and recently celebrated the fact that 125,000 documents had been prepared using the new technology.

Karen Edwards, Health Informatics Project Manager at the Trust, said: “With the help of the G2 system, turnaround times have reduced from 19 days in some departments down to five days and our Breast Care Department regularly has turnaround times of 24 hours.’’

The system works by the healthcare professional dictating their letter into the system and recognition technology converts their audio into text which is then checked for accuracy before sending to the patient.
