Blackpool Teaching Hospital consultant named best doctor at national Who Cares Wins awards

Dr Nicola Cable, Head of Paediatrics at Blackpool’s Blenheim House Child Development Centre has been named Best Doctor in the popular Who Cares Wins awards.

During the awards night, hosted by Davina McCall, the audience heard about the care Dr Cable provided to baby Evie and her Mum Kelly. After Kerry Coles gave birth, her little girl stopped breathing and doctors pronounced her brain dead.

Evie was put on a life support machine so devastated parents Kerry, 40, and Jack, 29, could say goodbye… but thanks to the heroic efforts of Dr Nicola Cable, Evie is now a thriving three-year-old.

Incredibly, Evie defied everyone’s expectations and started breathing on her own, but her condition meant she was not expected to be able to reach typical milestones and would even struggle to stand and sit.

But thanks to Dr Cable’s determination to help Evie fulfil her potential and three years of hard work, she has finally been discharged from her care and is a happy and healthy little girl. Kerry commented, “Not once did Dr Cable ever stop pushing. Not once did she say to us, ‘It’s as good as it’s going to get’. She was so determined to do her best with Evie.

“She’s an incredible doctor and Evie definitely wouldn’t be where she is without her.”
These comments were echoed by Nicolas colleague, Angela Richardson, who also put a separate nomination forwarded. She said, “Dr Cable really is one in a million. She works tirelessly and relentlessly, giving a significant amount of her own time to keep the child development centre running.”

Dr Nicola Cable was shortlisted alongside two other doctors and attended the London event with Evie and her mum, who also joined them on stage and proudly looked on as her doctor paid tribute to the youngsters in her care. Nicola was announced the category winner by presenters Moira Stuart and Harry Redknapp.

Dr Cable said: “I am truly honoured to receive this The Sun Who Cares Wins award for Best Doctor. It was a wonderful evening celebrating truly amazing people. This recognition is not solely for me but the whole team at Blenheim Child Development Centre.

It is a testament to our empathy and dedication to make every child reach their developmental potential. I love working with families like Evie’s who are inspirational.”
