Pathology teams praised in national accreditation

Teams at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are celebrating a national accreditation.

The Biochemistry, Haematology and Blood Transfusion teams which come under the Pathology department based at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, have maintained their ISO 15189, an international standard that specifies the requirements for quality and competence in medical laboratories.

The laboratories each experienced a rigorous two day inspection by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) which focussed on all aspects of the quality management system including training, competency assurance, laboratory technical processing, internal quality testing and benchmarking against national quality assurance schemes.

Clare Ellis, Clinical Support Quality Manager, said: “Maintaining accreditation to ISO 15189 standards has been a fantastic team effort, particularly this year with all the challenges we’ve encountered.

“Once again the assessors were full of praise for the teams, and in particular highlighted staff knowledge and competency, the strength of the Quality Management System, user focus and had real confidence in the processes assessed.

“It’s testament to the staff’s considerable efforts in constantly striving for quality and above all, accuracy, in their work. We are very proud of this achievement.”
