The role of the Listener is to complement the work of the Patient Experience Team by supporting improvements to the way patients and carers are treated in clinical areas. It includes collecting survey forms from the Patients Experience Office and visiting Wards, introducing themselves to patients, relatives and visitors on the wards and helping patients and relatives complete the survey.

Listeners also spend time with patients, cheering them up and offering a much-needed distraction from treatment. Eleanor Walsh, Patient Experience Manager, said : “We often find patients don’t want to bother staff if they have a problem because they can see they’re busy, so it’s great to have the Listeners on site who are all friendly and approachable and will sit and talk at length to the patients.”
