Cardiac team give thumbs up to inpatient smoking cessation service
Across England, 6.4 million people are living with Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), a disease with higher numbers than any other illness. Every six minutes someone in the UK is admitted to Hospital with a heart attack. Blackpool has more premature deaths from CHD than any other area in England! In 2020, there were more than 1100 hospital admissions at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals as a result of a myocardial Infarction (heart attack).
At Blackpool Teaching Hospitals, we accept patients who are having a heart attack from all over Lancashire and Cumbria. Smoking is one of the biggest risk factors for heart disease.
Lisa McKensie, an Advanced Practitioner in Cardiology at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals says:
“It’s great that we now have a dedicated Inpatient Smokefree service. They can offer advice, discuss stop smoking treatment options and can refer patients to our community stop smoking services – Quit Squad (Fylde and Wyre) and the Blackpool NHS Tobacco Addiction Service – for an additional 12 weeks support after discharge.”
“We encourage all patients who smoke to stop smoking in order to give themselves the best chance of a healthier future. The risk of further heart attack is cut by half after 1 year if you stop smoking (CDC, 2020).”
