The Speech and Language Therapy team work with a wide range of children; depending on the age of your child and on their needs you may be supported by directed to different areas of our service. You can see more information about each area of our team below.
Once your child has been assessed your therapist may recommend specific therapy option, depending on your child’s needs. This could be individual sessions, groups, or workshops or courses for yourself as parents or carers.
The Clinic Speech and Language Therapy Service
Therapists are based in clinics across Lancaster and Morecambe. Children with a wide range of communication difficulties will be seen. We offer assessment and review appointments, individual or group therapy sessions and provide advice, support and programmes to nurseries and schools.
Drop in sessions are also offered and are open to anyone with concerns about a child’s communication. Monthly drop in clinics are held at each local clinic and a referral is not needed. Make sure you look at the Drop In poster for dates.
The Special School Speech and Language Therapy Service
This service covers the following special schools within the Lancaster and Morecambe area, Bleasdale School (Silverdale), Morecambe Road School and The Loyne Specialist School. We may see children for individual therapy sessions, offer group work, give advice and support to school staff as well as providing programmes and writing reports for communication and feeding. We can also provide training to staff on these issues. Therapy is usually at school but we are happy for parents to contact us. Home visits may also be offered during the school holidays.
The SLCN (Speech, Language and Communication Needs) Service
The SLCN team are commissioned by Lancashire County Council to provide a short term intensive based service to children with an Education and Health Care Plan (EHCP) or statement. Your child’s Speech and Language Therapist will determine whether your child meets the criteria for this service.
The Mainstream School Service
This team offers therapy provision within mainstream schools across Lancaster and Morecambe for children with high levels of need for speech, language and communication.
The Early Years Speech and Language Therapy Service
This team supports children aged 0-4 years who have significant communication difficulties and other complex additional needs. We work closely with families as well as other professional s involved with your child. We are based at Longlands Child Development Centre but see children in a variety of settings such as at home or nursery. It is not possible for you to directly refer your child to this service.
The Paediatric Dysphagia (Feeding and Swallowing) Service
This team offer assessment and advice to any child aged 0-16 years old where there are concerns about eating and drinking. A referral can be made by parents or professionals but the child’s GP and Paediatrician must be made aware of this referral.
