School Nursing

School Nurses with students

The school nursing teams provide health promotion and advice within schools.

On April 1, 2019, the Lancashire 0-19 Health Visiting and School Nursing services transferred to Virgin Care. Blackpool services are not affected by this transfer. For more information, please see here: Patient Information Notice – Transfer of services

Once a child has started school, the Health Visiting Service transfers care to the School Nursing Teams. These teams provide health promotion and advice within school to all school-aged children and continue to work with families who required additional support in times of difficulties. School Nursing works within a four level service offer that reflects that of Health Visiting to ensure continuity from 0-19 years.

School Nurses are Registered Nurses, many of whom have an additional qualification as a Public Health Nurse who specialise in child and adolescent health, working with the school and wider community. They aim to promote the health and wellbeing of all school age children and their families. They work in partnership with health, education, social services and voluntary agencies.
