Research and Development

Clinical Research is embedded within the day to day work of Blackpool Teaching Hospitals. We want to look into new ways to prevent, manage and treat diseases for the people of Blackpool and the Fylde coast.

Each year the Trust runs over 100 high quality clinical research studies led by over 40 experienced Principal Investigators from a range of specialties.  We have a dedicated and highly skilled Research Delivery Team encompassing key support services who work in partnership with clinical teams across the Trust. We have access to a state of the art Clinical Studies Centre where we can see research participants in a relaxed and safe environment.

We conduct a range of studies from genetics studies and questionnaires, to highly complex, randomised controlled trials testing new drugs, devices and therapies. We work with a number of key partners including the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), academia, industry and other NHS Trusts both regionally and nationally.

BLACKPOOL’s RESEARCH RESPONSE TO COVID 19

The Research and Development team have been tasked with supporting the Government’s Urgent Public Health Research Programme during the pandemic.

We have opened, and are recruiting to, a range of priority COVID-19 specific research studies and this will continue over the coming months. We have currently paused recruitment to other studies, however we continue to monitor our research participants on existing trials.

This will be kept under review.
