Our Orthopaedic team is made up of clinicians who are experts in their field. We have a team of specialist surgeons who have a wealth of experience and qualifications between them. The team carry out a range of treatments and surgeries, including joint replacements.

Mr Anoop Anand - Orthopaedic Consultant
Mr Anoop Anand

    Qualifications: MBBS, D ortho, DNB Ortho, MRCS, FRCS Tr & Ortho

    About: Mr Anand is a consultant in the Trauma and Orthopaedics department. After graduating from Trivandrum Medical School, South India in 1996, he completed a post-graduate in Orthopaedics in 2000. His career at Blackpool Victoria Hospital began in 2005 and for the last 16 years he has worked in a variety of sub-specialties, including foot and ankle surgery, lower limb arthroplasty and trauma surgery.

    Mr Anand developed a special interest in foot and ankle surgery, paediatric orthopaedics and lower limb arthroplasty and trained in those specialities, as well as undertaking a visitation to Alder Hey Paediatric Hospital in Liverpool.

    Special surgery interests: Paediatric Orthopaedic procedures, Adult procedures such as Diabetic foot reconstruction, treatment of forefoot and Midfoot arthritis, Bunion/Hallux Valgus corrective surgery, lesser toe surgeries including deformity correction and fusions, first MTPJ replacement, Ankle Fusion surgery, Hind foot and midfoot fusions, Flat foot corrections, Cavus foot correction, Ankle arthroscopies, ligament reconstructions of Ankle and Foot, Achilles tendon pathology treatment, tendon surgeries of foot and Ankle, knee arthroscopies, Primary Hip and Knee Arthroplasty

Mr Brijesh
Mr Brijesh Ayyaswamy

    Qualifications: MBBS, D ortho, MS Ortho, DNB Ortho, MRCS, FRCS Ortho

    About: Mr Ayyaswamy graduated from T.D. Medical College, Alappuzha (MBBS), University of Kerala, India, and completed post-graduate training in orthopaedics at Calicut Medical College, University of Calicut, India. He started his career in the UK at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2009.

    He developed a keen interest in foot and ankle surgery and worked at the Foot and Ankle Unit at Hereford County Hospital from 2011-2012. He then moved to Blackpool Victoria Hospital to work in the Foot and Ankle Unit, paediatric orthopaedics and primary hip and knee arthroplasty from 2012-2019.

    Between 2019-2020, Mr Brijesh did a BOA Foot and Ankle fellowship at North Tees and Hartlepool University Hospitals and did a visitation at Alderhey Children’s Hospital in 2021 for three months.

    He currently works as a consultant for Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and has a special interest in foot and ankle and diabetic foot surgeries.

    Research Interests: Foot and Ankle, General orthopaedics, Infections and diabetic foot. Has multiple publications in Foot and Ankle surgery.

    Awards and Prizes: Best Speaker at British Vascular physiotherapy meeting 2021,Selected my presentation for Foot and Ankle award section presentation in ASIA Pacific Orthopaedic conference 2021.

Mr Choudhry
Mr Muhammad Choudhry

    About: Muhammad Naghman Choudhry is a Consultant at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust specialising in Hand, Elbow and Shoulder Surgery.

    He attained his Medical Degree from Liverpool Medical School. After completing his specialist training in Manchester he undertook a Royal College of Surgeons approved Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship under Professor Amar Rangan (President of British Elbow & Shoulder Society). This is where he learnt keyhole surgery (Arthroscopy) in Shoulders as well as Shoulder Arthroplasty (Replacement surgery).

    Mr Choudhry was then invited to perform a fellowship at the world-renowned Melbourne Orthopaedic Group in Australia. This further enhanced his operating skills in the management of Upper Limb procedures with strong emphasis on elite athlete injury management and reconstructive surgery.

    Before returning to UK, Mr Choudhry further fine-tuned his skills in advanced/complex Shoulder Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty in Brisbane, Australia under the tutelage of A/Professor Ken Cutbush and A/Professor Ashish Gupta.

    These experiences have allowed Mr Choudhry to provide a unique and holistic approach towards managing his patients in the UK.

    Mr Choudhry is very keen on educating the next generation. This includes teaching medical students, nurses, physiotherapists and trainee surgeons. He has held Honorary Lecturer positions at the Edge Hill University and at the University of Salford, Manchester. He has also organized and run consultant exam courses, including the FRCS consultant exam for the Royal College of Surgeons. He has published many articles and presented his work at national and international meetings.

Mr Khan
Mr Khan

    Qualifications: MBBS, AFRCS (Ireland), FRCS Trauma and Orthopaedics (UK)

    About: Mr Khan completed his MBBS at the Dow Medical College, University of Karachi, Pakistan, in 1996. In 2003 he did his AFRCS at Ireland Royal College of Surgeons and completed training in the north west of England. He was also offered a fellowship in Trauma and Orthopaedics in 2016.

    Mr Khan joined Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in January 2020 and has specialist interests in upper limb – hand, elbow and shoulder – surgery.

    Common Procedures: 

    Hand and Wrist:  Carpal Tunnel, Trigger finger, Dupuytrens surgery, Trapeziectomy, Small joint replacements in hand, Wrist Arthroscopy, Wrist Fusion and Wrist and hand fracture surgery.

    Elbow: Tennis elbow, Cubital tunnel release, Elbow arthroscopy, Radial head replacement, Elbow trauma surgery

    Shoulder: Arthroscopic shoulder surgery including instability procedures and cuff repairs, Shoulder arthroplasty (Replacement surgery), Shoulder and clavicle fracture fixation surgery.

    About: Mr Shah joined Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a consultant in 2013. His focus is on delivering an ethical and sensible consult and his ability to explain the pathology (in simple terms) and laying out the options is vital to his approach.

    “Sometimes it’s about giving you time to make that call and, in some cases, it’s about having that additional information to get your head around the problem.”

    Mr Shah has a specialist interest in hips and knees and he deals with all pathologies related to and including sports injuries, having painful or unstable joints due to early wear and tear, and severe forms of arthritis.

    He has been based in the north west since 2003 and has enjoyed learning from other surgeons across different hospitals. This includes working at Wrightington Hospital (a centre of excellence for orthopaedic work) as the John Charnley Fellow, learning how to tackle complex hip and knee problems.

Mr Steve Mannion

    Qualifications: MA, MChir, DTM&H, DMCC, FRCS (Tr & Orth), RD

    About: Mr Steve Mannion studied medicine at Downing College, Cambridge. After graduation, Steve combined his specialist orthopaedic surgical training at Guys and St Thomas' Hospitals in London with overseas humanitarian surgical missions with Medecins Sans Frontieres and other agencies to Afghanistan, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia and Angola; and also working in Kigali, Rwanda in the immediate aftermath of the 1994 genocide.

    In 1999 he was appointed Trauma Research Fellow in San Antonio, Texas, completing there his Master’s thesis in the biomechanics of landmine injury. Thereafter he spent three years as a medical missionary in Malawi, being the only orthopaedic surgeon for the entire central and northern regions of the country, a catchment population of some 6-7 million people.

    In 2003 Steve returned to the UK to take up a job-share consultant appointment in trauma and orthopaedic surgery at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, combining his work there with up to 6 months per year overseas, running orthopaedic training and education projects in the developing world.

    He founded the charity "Feet First" in order to support this work and in 2004 was appointed a Winston Churchill Memorial Fellow in recognition of his projects which focussed on the treatment of clubfoot deformity in the developing world.

    In January 2005, at the request of the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health he undertook a consultancy mission to the Tsunami affected areas of the country and also, in November 2005, he was involved in the orthopaedic surgical reconstruction of victims of the earthquake in Northern Pakistan. Since 2006, Steve has been an orthopaedic advisor to the international disability charity CBM and in 2010 worked with MERLIN as part of the humanitarian surgical response to the conflict in Libya.

    As of September 2013, he has been head of the Dept of Conflict and Catastrophe Medicine at St George’s, University of London and Medical Director of the Global Clubfoot Initiative (GCI). In November 2013, Steve led the UK surgical team in Tacloban, Philippines, treating injured people from Typhoon Haiyan; and in 2015 led the UK Emergency Medical Team responding to the earthquake in Nepal. In response to the 2020 COVID, crisis Steve was appointed Clinical Operations Director of the Nightingale Northwest Hospital in Manchester.

    Steve combines his part-time NHS consultant work in Blackpool with on-call orthopaedic trauma surgery at Major Trauma Centre in Preston and as Clinical Lead for the Lancashire and South Cumbria Major Trauma Network. In Blackpool he offers general elective orthopaedic services including hip and knee joint replacement, knee arthroscopy, foot and ankle surgery and hand surgery.

    Specialist interests: He has special interests in ultrasound guided musculoskeletal injection therapies, trauma reconstruction, amputation and clubfoot.

Mr Javed

    About: Mr Javed specialises in hip and knee surgeries and carries our hip and knee join replacements, which include: cementless hip replacements in younger patients and UNI compartmental or partial knee replacements. He also regularly performs revision hip and knee replacements.

    Other areas of interest include lower limb arthroscopy and knee ligament reconstruction procedures. He also performs knee arthroscopy for sport injuries as well as degenerative disease.

    Specialist interests: Hip Replacements for various age groups including revision hip replacements, knee replacements including revision surgery, knee arthroscopy and ligaments reconstruction, sports injuries of lower limbs and general trauma management, teaching and training
