Development in Orthopaedics
Our department is always improving and evolving and we work hard to ensure our patients receive the best care and have a smooth care journey with us.

We’d like to share with you our latest updates on developments in the department and what it means for patients.

New surgical developments:
  • We have started ankle replacement surgery and wrist arthroscopies for patients in the Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre area
  • Plasma Rich Platelet (PRP) injections are now being undertaken as an outpatient procedure
  • We are looking to increase day case surgical capacity
What we are working on over the next 12 months:
  • We are looking to increase Radiology capacity to reduce waiting times for hand and wrist procedures or patients waiting x-ray guided injections
  • Developing our Plaster Room
  • Collaboratively working with the MSK service to review patients referred with the Orthopaedic consultants to streamline processes
  • Collaborative working across the ICS for the Orthotic service
  • Implement Virtual Fracture Clinic where appropriate to reduce waiting times in Orthopaedic clinic
  • Looking to undertake Saturday Paediatric lists to reduce Orthopaedic waiting times
Our five year improvement plan/service changes:
  • Looking to modernise the Plaster Room
  • Increase Ortho-geriatrician/ANP support to help with recovery and reduce patients’ length of stay
  • Cold site for Orthopaedics
  • Looking to support services where possible to reduce patients’ length of stay following an inpatient procedure
