Talking Therapies

Our staff are trained in a range of different talking therapies and you can find out more about these by clicking on the buttons below. We provide talking therapies in a variety of ways including face-to-face meetings, telephone sessions, and groups and computerised support.  Select any of the buttons below to read more about these different forms of help available.

Stress Control Course

The Stress Control Course has been developed to help if you are struggling with anxiety, depression, anger, stress or panic.  The sessions are designed to teach you to ‘become your own therapist’, and involves learning about anxiety and depression, and key skills to help you manage day to day.

Each week covers a different topic and teaches new skills and you are given a series of booklets that accompany the sessions. There is an emphasis on doing work outside of the sessions to practice the skills you have learnt so that you can get the best out of this learning experience.

Please be aware that this is not group therapy and there is no sharing of information or talking about people’s problems.  You will not have to answer any questions or talk etc. during the sessions.

Duration

There are six one and a half hour lecture style presentations.

"The tutors were clear and concise and covered all aspects of stress, what and why we get various types of stress and how we can best cope with it."

"The course provided easy to use, straight forward tools."

Psychological Well-being Practitioners

Our PWPs are skilled at helping people to find practical ways to manage their difficulties. They offer one to one sessions using methods such as guided self-help, stress management techniques and information giving sessions.

Guided Self Help – Guided Self-Help is a treatment for depression and a range of anxiety disorders recommended by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence).  It is based on Cognitive Behavioural approaches and is delivered by our Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWPs).

You will get one to one support to help you;

  • Understand your current difficulties and how they are affecting you and
  • Learn techniques to change unhelpful thoughts and behaviours.

Your treatment will involve you using a range of self-help materials and completing between session tasks. The aim is to give you a toolkit of coping strategies, helping you to become your own Therapist, and prevent future setbacks. This treatment will be tailored to your individual needs and directed towards your own personal goals.

Where?

The majority of our appointments are by video or telephone. We also offer online treatment and are continuing to offer a limited number of face-to-face appointments where this is the most clinically appropriate and safe option. When you have your first appointment with us, you can discuss the most appropriate option for you with one of our clinicians.

Duration?

Appointments are generally weekly and last for 30 minutes.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

What?

CBT can help you to change how you think ("Cognitive") and what you do ("Behaviour"). These changes can help you to feel better. Unlike some of the other talking treatments, CBT focuses on problems and difficulties in the "here and now".  Instead of focusing on the causes of your distress or symptoms in the past, it looks for ways to improve your state of mind now.

You will work together with your Therapist in changing things that you do , challenging any unhelpful thinking patterns, or both.

While you wait

Leeds IAPT have shared the three seminars below, to be used in conjunction with the booklets by each video. The seminars aim to help you understand what to expect from your CBT and to make the most of it. It also helps you to understand what maintains anxiety and depression and outlines techniques to cope and overcome difficulties. All the techniques are included in the booklets.

EMDR

EMDR is a therapy that helps people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences.  The goal of EMDR therapy is to properly process the traumatic memories, reducing their impact and helping you to develop coping mechanisms. This is done through an eight-phase approach to address the past, present, and future aspects of a stored memory, requiring you to recall distressing events while receiving bilateral sensory input, including:

  • Side to side eye movements
  • Hand tapping
  • Auditory tones.

Couples Counselling

When someone experiences psychological distress or a mental health problem such as depression, it can have an effect on relationships. Couples counselling is a treatment approach offered to couples where one of you, or both of you, are experiencing depression and would like to attend sessions together, to better understand these effects and how to manage them.

If you are interested in accessing couples counselling for depression, please ask about it at your welcome call.

Mindfulness Courses

Mindfulness refers to the practice of developing, in a non-judgmental manner, a deeper awareness of what is happening within one’s mind and body from moment to moment. Certain meditation technique such as, breathing meditations, sitting meditations, body scan meditations, walking meditations, and yoga, may help to improve a person’s mindfulness.

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCTcombines cognitive behavioural techniques with mindfulness strategies in order to help individuals better understand and manage their thoughts, emotions and body sensations, in order to achieve relief from feelings of distress.

This MBCT course is for complete beginners as well as for those who have had some experience of meditation or mindfulness.  It is taught in a group in a relaxed and friendly environment. Like any skill, mindfulness takes time to practice and we will recommend you set some time aside each day for daily home meditation practice to be able to really make good use of what you learn each week.

You will be given guided meditations for you to listen to at home or wherever is convenient for you to practice. There are eight sessions in total, usually on a weekly basis. Each weekly session lasts for two hours.

If you would like to try this course, please ask about it at your welcome call.
