Meet the Team
Blackpool Children and Young Persons Learning Disability Team made up of different healthcare professionals who provide specialist assessment, support, and advice to children and young people up to the age of 18 who have moderate to severe learning disabilities this can be on a variety of needs.

The team is committed to working in partnership with parents and caregivers to support families and educate others to help children and young people with learning disabilities to manage their every day. We offer interventions around the needs of the child which could be within school, online and the home environment.

Cathy Charlton

    Role: Operational Manager, Children and Young Persons Learning Disability Team

    About: I’m the operational manager for the Children and Young Persons Learning Disability Team which means I support the team to deliver the best care possible to our service users and their families. I have worked in the NHS for the last 15 years and I am passionate about working with others to ensure care is collaborative and represents the needs of our local community.

Melissa Coward

    Role: Senior Learning Disability Practitioner

    About: My role within the team is Senior Learning Disability Practitioner for the team and my favourite part of the job is meeting and supporting people with learning disability and their families.

Danielle Hackwood

    Role: Assistant Practitioner

    About: I am one of the assistant practitioners for the team and my favourite part of the job is providing support for children and young people with a learning disability to maximise their everyday opportunities in life.

Steph Howcroft

    Role: Assistant Practitioner

    About: I am one of the assistant practitioners on the team and my favourite part of the job is making a difference to the lives of the children and there families with the ups and downs of living with a learning disability.

Laura Powell

    Role: Team Secretary

    About: My role is team secretary for the children and young persons learning disability team and I ensure the smooth running of the day to day admin processes.

Tracy Wild

    Role: Assistant Practitioner

    About: I enjoy all aspects of my job role, mainly supporting parents/ carers and their children  to manage their everyday life.

    Role: Senior Learning Disability Practitioner

    About: My role within the team is Senior Learning Disability Practitioner. I have worked in the NHS for the past 9 years and I am passionate about supporting children and young people with learning disabilities and their families.

Who is the service for?

The Children and Young Persons Learning Disability team supports young people under the age of 18 with a diagnosed learning disability and registered with a Blackpool GP. Our assessments are carried out by qualified professionals, and we are a needs led service meaning that we plan our interventions around each child or young person and their parent/caregiver.

The following are some of the issues that we can support with:

  • Behaviours that challenge
  • Toileting with a behavioural element
  • Anxiety
  • Sleep
  • Engagement sessions
  • Weekly drop-in
  • Non-judgemental, friendly environment
  • Liaison with other services

Referrals

All referrals for the Children’s and Young Persons Learning Disability Team can be emailed to: bfwh.cypldteam@nhs.net and one of our team will screen the referral and let you know the outcome. You can also email the team for a referral form to complete and send back. Please note: We accept referrals until 4:30pm from Monday to Friday and we are closed on bank holidays.

We also have a telephone consultation service on Tuesday afternoons between 1pm – 3:30pm for professionals to talk through any referrals they may have in mind. During this time, a member of our team will be on hand to offer advice and consultation before making a referral.

A member of our team will also be at the CYPLD Parent and carer drop-in every Friday morning from 9:30am – 11:30am at Aiming Higher, 231-233 Church Street, Blackpool, FY1 3PB (from 25th August 2023) to offer advice and support to families who have a child or young person with a Learning Disability.
