What we do

Welcome to the anaesthetics and theatres section of our website, where you can find information about the work of the department and answers to some of the questions you may have about the process of your anaesthesia.

As well as the provision of anaesthesia, the directorate is responsible for the provision of acute and chronic pain services and critical care services on the high dependency unit (HDU) and the intensive therapy unit (ITU) at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

Anaesthesia is provided on an elective and emergency basis for general surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, orthopaedic surgery, ear, nose and throat surgery, maxilo-facial surgery, gynaecology and maternity. There is also 24-hour provision of epidural services to the delivery suite.

The directorate has a significant commitment to the teaching of trainee specialist medical staff, junior nursing and technical support staff. It has therefore formed strong educational links with the University of Manchester, Northwest Deanery, the Northwest School of Anaesthesia and the University of Central Lancashire. Please see the links in this section for more information about these establishments.
