Nutrition and Hydration Week

Nutrition and Hydration Week has been taking place every year since March 2002 and organisations all over the world take part in the annual event.

Its purpose is to bring people together to create energy, focus and fun in order to highlight and educate people on the value of food and drink in maintain health and wellbeing in health and social care.

Blackpool Teaching Hospitals have been a part of this celebration year in year out and 2019 has been one of our best years yet. Teams across the hospital played their own part holding various events and providing information throughout the week.

Nutrition and Hydration Week 2020

Even though the wards were even busier than usual this year, they still managed to put together some great displays outlining the importance of nutrition and hydration for their patients.

This year we wish well-deserved congratulations to Ward 35 who came first with their colourful and eye-catching corner. We would also like to thank the other wards who participated in helping to promote the week’s themes.

News on the Mezzanine

Last year, the Dietetics Team took to the stands at the Grand Round and on the mezzanine at Blackpool Victoria Hospital promoting the importance of nutritional support on the wards and taking a food first approach when encouraging patient with oral intake—we had a great response from the medics and ward staff.

Tea and Cake on Ward 35

Ward 35 hosted a tea party for the patients on the ward.  Patients enjoyed some tea and cake at the table as did those who were unable to sit out of bed. Ward Manager Gail explained that the ward try to encourage patients to sit out at the table as much as they can.

Did you take on the Ward Challenge?

The Dietitian Team set a challenge for the hospital wards to create the best focus board  promoting the importance of nutrition and hydration on the wards. There was a fantastic hamper up for grabs for the winner provided by our fantastic reps. We had a tremendous response with 19 wards taking part in the challenge. The standard of entries was high and a lot of competition and hard work had gone into the boards. All boards faced the judges but there could only be one winner. Congratulations to Ward 25 who produced a fantastic display around nutritional support and awareness of malnutrition on the wards. Further congratulations to Ward 35 who came runners up—another excellent display.
