An Advanced Nurse Practitioner at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals has won an award after supporting a new mother whose child was suffering from severe heart failure.

Katie Lander, who works at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, won the Patient’s Award in the recent Celebrating Success staff awards.

Nominations for the award came from patients or their relatives and carers. The prize was awarded to a member of staff who deserves special recognition for their outstanding contribution to ensuring patients always receive the highest standard of care at all times.

More than 100 nominations were received for the award category.

Katie was nominated by a new mother after spotting something wrong with a little girl born at 34 weeks. Tests revealed the baby was in severe heart failure, and Katie dedicated her time to making sure she got the treatment required.

Katie said: “I had spent a lot of time with this lovely family and their poorly baby but to be nominated was a huge honour. I always try to do my best in my job and so to be highlighted for this was very unexpected but very lovely.

“I have the best job and the best team and am so very lucky to do what I love every day. Being nominated was great, and to win, was overwhelming.

“I am very grateful to the family who nominated me but very humbled that I was able to help them. It truly feels like a once-in-a-career achievement so I am incredibly lucky and proud to have won.”
