More Physician Associate students welcomed to the Trust

Students practicing Basic Life Support Skills

The Trust has welcomed two groups of Physician Associate students from UCLAN to study at Blackpool.

There are two groups of students here with us with second year students undertaking specialty placements in A&E, Surgery, Obs and Gynae, and Paediatrics over six weeks.

The second cohort is of first year students who will be undertaking placements in AMU, Respiratory Medicine, Stroke Medicine, Cardiology, Care of the Older Person and Diabetes and Endocrinology. They will be on their placements for eight weeks in total.

Student placing a cannula during clinical skills

As part of their induction, the students spent an afternoon in Clinical Skills and Simulation. This allows the students to have an opportunity to develop their skills before they start on their placements. The training included practising placing cannulas and basic life support training as shown in the pictures.

There is a campaign across the hospital to make more staff aware of the role of the Physician Associates and the part they play in a multi-disciplinary team. The Medical Education department has been promoting the students in their placements, making staff aware of their capabilities.

The previous cohort of students participated in a video to showcase their role as a Physician Associate. They were supported by educational supervisors, sharing the importance of the students.

This video has been shared across the North West, and nationally sharing good practice. Please see link to watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbLV-OWbvPI

There will be an opportunity to find out more about the Physician Associates in the Trust during the grand round on the 27th of September.

Presenting will be Dr Harriet Preston, lead for the Physician Associates. She will be joined by staff members and the students who will be sharing their experiences. All staff welcome are welcome to attend.
