Fylde coast nurse gets ready for New York marathon fundraiser

A FYLDE coast nurse is putting his best foot forward to raise money for patients at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

Gareth Burns, who works on ward 10 at the hospital is running the New York Marathon in November and has set himself a target of £2,500 to help patients

It is the first time he has run this distance but says he is determined to do it to help the people he treats on a daily basis.

Gareth said: “I am taking part in the Marathon on November 4 to raise money for Ward 10, which is a respiratory ward.

“I have worked as a staff nurse on this ward for two years and am proud to work with a hardworking, highly skilled and enthusiastic team who help care for and treat people who have a variety of acute and chronic respiratory conditions.

“We have acutely ill patients with non-invasive ventilation, chest drains, tracheostomies and laryngectomies among others.’’

He added: “With help from the hospital charity, Blue Skies Hospitals Fund, I hope to raise money to help improve the patients experience on our ward, and also raise awareness of some of the many respiratory conditions that people have to deal with including COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, pneumonia and asthma.

“We have a driven, dynamic and highly trained team, we just need your help to have more resources to provide the best care.’’
