The Early Language Development Programme (ELDP)

Formerly part of the the Early Language Development Programme (ELDP), these training courses are now part of ICAN’s Early Talk 0-5s programme. Since February 2012, the programme has been helping to create a better skilled workforce, with the knowledge, confidence and skills to support speech, language and communication development in the early years. It builds upon the success of Every Child a Talker (ECAT) and targets pre-school children, with a particular focus on under 3s.

The programme aims to:

  • increase awareness and knowledge of early speech, language and communication development amongst early years practitioners, health and education professionals, parents, carers and family members;
  • equip practitioners in early years settings with the confidence and the knowledge to provide an accurate summary of a child’s development between the ages of 24-26 months;
  • provide support to Children’s Centres and settings to embed early language development practices, and raise the quality of provision.

We deliver the programme as two separate training days:

Working with under 3s – focusses on Speech, language and communication development of babies and toddlers, along with positive approaches to supporting communication development in your setting.

Working with parents and families – concentrates on how to work with parents and families to help them to support their child’s SLC development.
