Subject
Dementia Detention Mental Health
Description

1). Please can you tell me over the last five financial years how many people with a dementia diagnosis have been detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 under section 2 or section 3 of the act. Please specify whether section 2 or section 3 was used.

2). Please specify where each person was detained e.g. hospital name

3). Please can you also tell me how many people with a dementia diagnosis who were detained under the Mental Health Act have subsequently been turned down for after-care by a care home and if more than one care home has turned down after-care please can you state how many homes have done so

Response

1).

  • We have only held Mental Health act detention status since February 2015
  • Whilst we maintain a record of all patients who are sectioned we do not routinely record a confirmed diagnosis of dementia

2). N/A

3). We are not required to record this information and as such have no way of knowing the specific number of patients. People get refused after-care by care homes all the time and often multiple times. This is really subjective as most dementia homes will take patients but will gauge their decision based on their own specific circumstances at the time e.g. staffing levels, the number of high dependency patients they already have etc.
