Description
  1. Do you have an assessment unit or short stay unit within your Trust?
  2. What is the maximum length of stay for children on your assessment or short stay unit before they are moved to an inpatient bed?
  3. How many beds do you have within your assessment unit or short stay unit?
  4. How many registered nurses are allocated to work in this area on any shift? How many are band 5’s? How many are band 6’s?
  5. How many HCAs are allocated to work in this area on any shift?
  6. Do you have staff that work only within the assessment unit or short stay unit?
  7. How many Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANP) work within Children’s Services?
  8. How many ANPs work within A&E? On the ward? Within the assessment unit or short stay unit?
  9. Do you operate nurse led discharges from your assessment unit or short stay unit? If you do, what band are nurses that discharge? Do they receive additional training to be able to discharge?
  10. Do you have a policy and/or SOP for your assessment unit or short stay unit? If you do can you provide me with a copy?
  11. Do you have a named consultant, register or ANP that takes lead over your assessment unit?
  12. How many in-patients do you have per year, for the last 4 years?
  13. Have you trained any staff nurses up to ANP? Have you funded their training and/or given them protected time for study?
  14. Can you provide a copy of your job description for ANPs working in Children’s Services?

  1. We have a Children`s Assessment unit (CAU) Opening times Mon- Fri 08.00- midnight Sat/Sun /BH 10.00- 22.30
  2. This varies dependent on the reason for admission – up to 6hrs
  3. We have 4 cubicles and 3 bed/cot places
  4. We plan for x2/3 qualified nurses bands 5/6
    Mon – Fri:
    X1 nurse 07.30-20.00
    X1 nurse 10.00-22.30
    X1 nurse 11.30-24.00
    Sat /Sun /BH:
    X2 nurses 10.00-22.30
  5. Maximum of X1
  6. No- we rotate staff from the Children`s Unit

  8. There is X1 ANP within the A/E department and none on the CAU

  13. We are in the process of training one member of staff to ANP. The place has been funded and Study time allocated
