Description
  1. Does the Trust allow women to have caesarean sections by maternal request (i.e. when a woman asks for a caesarean section when there is no other indication)?

    1. Please provide the relevant policy and/or guideline which sets out the Trust’s position on caesarean sections by maternal request. Please attach the document(s) or provide a direct link(s), stating page number if applicable.
    2. If applicable, please provide the patient information leaflet provided to women who ask for a maternal request caesarean section. Please attach the document or provide a direct link.

  1. Yes the current Caesarean section has been updated to give guidance on maternal request caesarean sections. This has been approved within division and currently awaiting approval by pharmacy.

    1. The Trust Caesarean Section – Pre Operative, Intrapartum And Postpartum Management Of Pregnant Women Guideline OBS/GYNAE/GUID/017 and updated guideline are attached. The updated guideline has an added section on maternal request for caesarean section. This policy has been approved within the division and is currently awaiting pharmacy approval.
      This has been addressed in the updated Caesarean Section – Pre Operative, Intrapartum And Postpartum Management Of Pregnant Women guideline (attached) with the addition of a section on maternal request for caesarean section as below. This policy has been approved within the division and is currently awaiting pharmacy approval

      3.2.5 Maternal request for Elective Caesarean Section

      All women who request a caesarean section without a clinical indication should be seen in pregnancy for counselling of the risks and benefits by 2 different consultants. An appointment with a second consultant should be requested as early in pregnancy as possible, to allow time for the appointment to occur before delivery (ideally at the first opportunity that the patient makes this request).

    2. The Trust does not have a patient information leaflet. Patients are signposted to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecology Choosing to have a caesarean section leaflet.
