Digital Staff Passports gain international recognition

The Health Informatics Team at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals has won a major international award for its pioneering work on the COVID-19 Digital Staff Passport.

The initiative saw colleagues from the Trust collaborate with NHSE/I and NHSX to develop and roll-out the COVID-19 Digital Staff Passport, allowing pre-employment checks for new hires and employees being transferred between NHS institutions in under five minutes, eliminating a lengthy manual process while maintaining the level of assurance, security, and privacy.

This work saw the team win the first prize in the European Identity Awards in the Verifiable Credentials and Decentralised Identity category.

Speaking about the award, Philip Graham, Digital Programme Director said: “It is fantastic that the hard work, passion and vision of the cross organisational team has been recognised by the European Identity and Cloud community in implementing world leading technologies to support enabling staff movement in the global crisis.

“We look forward to continuing our work with like-minded partners to further benefit staff and citizens as the NHS moves forward with strategic Digital Staff Passports and the benefits that they provide. BTH is truly at the heart of people digital innovation.”

The same project has also been shortlisted in the North West Coast Research and Innovation Awards in the Innovation in Workforce Deployment category.
